At First Aid Exeter we take pride in the quality of all of our first aid courses. For all of our paediatric first aid courses we follow the strict guidelines set out by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), EYFS and Ofsted.

What Are The Requirements?

What Does Ofsted Say?

First aid provision must be available at all times when children are being cared for, whether on childcare premises or during off-site visits and outings. The registered provider is responsible for ensuring these requirements are met.

At First Aid Exeter, our two-day Paediatric First Aid course is designed for professionals working with infants and children, while also being a valuable and informative option for parents. The course follows the syllabus set out by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Both the one-day and two-day Paediatric First Aid courses result in a paediatric first aid qualification valid for three years.

For individuals registering as childminders or home-based child carers, regulations require that the applicant holds a first aid qualification appropriate to the ages of the children in their care and the nature of the childcare provided.

For those registering as childcare providers, regulations require that at least one person caring for children on the premises holds a first aid qualification that is appropriate to the ages of the children being cared for and the nature of the provision.

Criteria For A Paediatric First Aid Certificate

Standard workplace first aid certificates, while suitable for many employment settings, are not sufficient for those working with infants and children.

In childcare settings where children have not yet reached puberty, carers are required to hold a paediatric first aid qualification.

Where care is provided to children who have reached puberty, an adult first aid qualification is appropriate.

The first aid qualification should be appropriate to the nature of the childcare provided, as certain activities may require additional or specialised first aid training.

Training should be specifically designed for those caring for children in the absence of their parents or guardians.

First aid certificates must be renewed every three years from the date of completion.

As the HSE no longer directly regulates the first aid training industry, responsibility now rests with the employer to select a suitable training provider. Employers should ensure that any provider chosen is competent to deliver first aid training and has appropriate quality assurance systems in place.

Further guidance for employers on selecting a first aid training provider is available on the HSE website.

First aid training is available from a wide range of providers who choose to:

  • Offer regulated qualifications; or

  • Operate under voluntary accreditation schemes; or

  • Operate independently of any such accreditation.

  • Include sufficient practical, hands-on training.

  • Use appropriate resuscitation and training equipment, including baby and junior models where relevant.

  • Cover the appropriate contents and use of first aid kits.

  • Include guidance on recording accidents and incidents.
